Looking for the perfect first-dance wedding song?

Updated on February 16, 2015

Your big day is getting closer and closer and while your wedding dress might still be getting tailored, your fiancé hasn’t chosen between chicken breast or filet mignon and you have yet to find the perfect sitting place for your 92 year old grandparents at least you already know what song you and your partner will open the party up with….right?

If your answer was no then don’t worry, be happy. Some songs will withstand the test of time: Amazed by Lonestar, At Last by Etta James, Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel and of course (one of my wedding songs) I do It For You by Bryan Adams.

Most of your guest will know and enjoy these selections but think back to how many weddings you’ve been to where the couple danced to those songs. Don’t you want your song to be different? Unique? Special?

Every portion of your wedding will be viewed at some point that evening: people will take photos of the center pieces, your cake will surely attract a lot of traffic and the dresses will get the mixed reviews that they always get (but you made a good choice).

After your court is announced, after the cute little ring bearers and flower girls have drawn their “awwwwss” from the crowd, even after your proud and hopefully tearful parents have made their way through…one this is certain: everyone’s eyes will be on you at the time of your special first dance. Consider the following:

Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

Marry Me - St. Vincent

Gracefully - Vintage Trouble

I Would Do Anything For You - Foster the People

I'm Torn Up - St. Paul and The Broken Bones

True Love - Coldplay

Better Together - Jack Johnson

Flowers In Your Hair - The Lumineers

Regardless of what kind of couple you are: The Traditionalist, The Jesters, The Hipsters, The Hopeless Romantics, The Smooth Operators or The Rebels, keep your options and mind open to new and possibly better things.

You need to feel comfortable with whomever you choose to play your event. You need to have constant and open lines of communication and they should be well versed in all musical categories.
